John Burns Construction is seeking a detail-driven and strategic Estimator to support preconstruction efforts across utility, infrastructure, and civil projects. This role is critical in building accurate, competitive bids for complex scopes including underground utilities, data centers, and municipal infrastructure.

This is not a plug-and-play estimating role—we are looking for someone who understands the work, sees risk before it happens, and builds estimates that win.

Key Responsibilities

• Prepare detailed cost estimates for civil and utility construction projects
• Analyze plans, specifications, and bid documents
• Perform quantity takeoffs and pricing for labor, materials, and equipment
• Solicit and evaluate subcontractor and supplier pricing
• Identify project risks, gaps, and opportunities within bid packages
• Collaborate with project managers and leadership on strategy and execution
• Support value engineering and cost optimization efforts

Qualifications

• 3+ years of estimating experience in heavy civil or utility construction
• Strong understanding of underground utilities (wet, electrical, telecom)
• Ability to read and interpret construction plans and specifications
• Experience with estimating software and takeoff tools
• High attention to detail and strong analytical mindset
• Self-driven with the ability to manage multiple bids simultaneously
