John Burns was awarded the transformer upgrade project by NICTD in the summer of 2021 as part of the broader South Shore Line power system enhancements. The project involved replacing two 34kV transformers with upgraded 69kV units to support increased power capacity along the commuter rail system. John Burns self-performed the installation of the new 69kV transformers, including the fabrication, delivery, and connection of the upgraded systems into the NICTD/NIPSCO network. One of the original 34kV transformers was salvaged and relocated to a newly designated spare storage site.
